Sector 3 / Register of Tequila Exporters

Alcoholic beverage obtained by fermentation and distillation of the juice of a variety of maguey; originated in Mexico. The tariff item for tequila is 2208.90.03. The Tequila Export Register includes: 1 tariff fraction subject to this register.

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA) reported that “Made in Mexico” tequila is already marketed in 98 countries, with sales reaching a volume greater than 196 million 736 thousand liters in 2016 and a estimated value at 1,203 million dollars

  • There are only 20 customs offices authorized to export tequila in the country
  • Tequila is placed within the category of “hazardous material” in the USA, which is the reason why prior customs authorization is required and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) format must be presented 48 hours before crossing
  • Besides mezcal, it isthe third Mexican agri-food product with the most demand abroad, only surpassed by beer and avocado, respectively.
  • Tequila was one of the few international products whose marketing was not affected by the pandemic, in fact, the opposite happened.
